Don't be left with high heating bills when the temperature drops. Prepare for the fall weather with these heating tips.
- Set the thermostat timer. Set the timer on your thermostat to lower the temperature when you sleep. Also, if you are not at home most of the day, don’t waste money to maintain a high temperature during that time.
- Change and clean air filters. Clean and replace your furnace filters regularly. Filters are inexpensive to replace compared to the higher heating bills resulting from not changing them frequently.
- Utilize another windowpane. Use storm or thermal windows when available. The layer of air between the windows acts as insulation.
- Tightly seal all drafts or leaks. To prevent or minimize window drafts, apply caulk or sealants, they are both inexpensive and effective.
- Dress warmly. Dress appropriately in the cooler months when indoors. Instead of raising the temperature on the thermostat, put on a sweatshirt.
- Turn down the water heater. Lowering the temperature in the water heater reduces power use, often without a noticeable difference to the user.
- Let some light in. During the day, open the curtains on all south-facing windows to warm your space. Close the curtains at night to assist in preventing the escape of heat.
- Buy a low-flow shower head. A water-efficient shower head can use 25%50% less hot water, saving you money on water and power bills.
- Insulate your ducts. If you have exposed heating ducts, wrap them in insulation to prevent the heat from escaping.
